James' Gate

Upstairs, Front Seat Collection
Dublin

THE STORY

This piece from the Upstairs, Front Seat has a very kind of maudlin, resigned feel. Obviously St. James’ Gate is one of the most recognised spots in Dublin and is the home of the Guinness brewery. I think Guinness did more to create the reputation and fame of Dublin than anything else, and in this picture i am trying to show the deeper emotions an reactions that alcohol brings into play.

Martin Amis, in his brilliant novel London Fields, talks about Street Sadness. I always loved that expression and this picture definitely has that feel to it. I deliberately messed with the colour tint to get a washed out, lonely palette.

The solitary figure trudging across a rain sparkling street carris the weight of the world and is inexorably making their way back to the source…
